The operation we were on was actually a semi-permanent one. We were basically supposed to report the goings on of Darian and his friend's organization and let them know when one of the chosen was auctioned off and to who, so they could be extracted and the shifter who purchased them arrested.
He was right to say we would eventually end up with the auctioned chosen since we had a one-hundred percent completion rate, but that didn't make the events leading up to their rescue any easier to stomach.
"We'll get you out of all this, soon, baby," I said, reaching out and grabbing his hand and reeling him in toward me. "We'll find a way."
"The investigation is supposed to be getting close. We have all kinds of information on both politicians, the tech guy, and enough shit on Darian and Brinkley to put them all away, but we still don't have anything on the event planner, who actually runs all the auctions."
"So, if we can find what we need on him, you'll be free and clear?" I pulled his arms around me, placing his palms on my ass.
He was getting better about touching me, but there was a part of him that seemed to be holding back, almost like he didn't feel like he had the right to, even though I'd told him several times that it was okay.
His eyes darkened immediately, and his mouth dropped open. There was a slight hesitation, and then he was squeezing tentatively, pressing us closer together.
A big, gorgeous smile lit up his face as he whispered, "Yeah."
In all my life, I'd truly never seen a sight more beautiful than Lane Whitley happy. There was nothing I wouldn't do, nobody I wouldn't kill to see him like that.
"I can't wait to see you smile all the time," I whispered, reaching up and running my fingers over his gorgeous lips where they were stretched wide to accommodate his gorgeous grin.
The smile bobbled, but remained as he stared at me in awe, shaking his head slightly. "God, you can be so freaking sweet."
He pressed his mouth to mine, the tentativeness about freely touching me gone as the emotional need to be as close as possible took over and he manhandled me into letting him lick into my mouth, and I manhandled him back, tasting every crevasse of his mouth while divesting him of his clothes while he did the same to me. The last thing to go was his necklace, but I was sure to toss against the door, so it would continue to mask his scent from anyone in the hall while allowing me the ability to scent him… allowing my kangaroo to scent him.
When our bodies came back together, our entire naked forms writhing against each other urgently, I gasped, breaking the kiss and letting my head fall back on my shoulders with how fucking amazing it felt when his dick brushed mine. His scent was intoxicating, and I couldn't seem to make myself stop taking long, deep breaths, drawing it inside my body.
Fuck. Mate stuff was intense. We weren't even grinding together, our dicks had literally just bumped into each other, and I was aching for more.
I needed to take it slow, this was his first time and it should be a patient, gentle thing with softly spoken words and confessions of love, but I apparently didn't have the control to pull back and get a grip, especially when he shoved me back on the bed, making me sprawl across the middle of it attractively before stopping to look at me, his hand wrapping around his big dick and squeezing before shuddering noticeably.
He swallowed hard, his eyes moving over me. While I appreciated his appraisal, and the way his gorgeous eyes burned with need the more he watched me, I couldn't deny myself my own chance to see every inch of him.
I groaned as my eyes slid over every inch of his muscular frame covered in enough padding to fill my hands when I was rubbing them all over him, and jiggling slightly when I was fucking him stupid.
I reached my hands out, beckoning him closer so I could feel him on my skin again, and he groaned climbing up over me and straddling my thighs while leaning down to press as much of his body to mine while eating at my mouth with his.
When his fingers found my nipple, pinching it lightly before rolling it, I growled, flipping him on to his back and reaching under the pillow to drag out the bottle of lube I'd put there earlier.
"I'm going to claim you, Lane," I growled against his mouth, lubing my fingers before reaching down between us, and massaging his hole.
He gasped, throwing his head back and spreading his legs as far as they would go.
"If you don't want this, you need to let me know now, okay?"
He blinked his eyes open, licking his lips as he frowned in concentration. "I want it," he finally whimpered. I want it so fucking bad."
I pressed a finger inside, growling at the scorching heat of him as he groaned, rocking his hips. His hands latched on to my face again, and he jerked my mouth to his, whimpering against my lips before forcing his tongue between them.
I worked him open as slowly as he would let me, but when he wasn't demanding my tongue duel with his, he was pulling back from our kiss to demand I give him more.
I was leaking continuously between us, and when I finally pulled back from our kiss to swipe lube down my dick, he swiped his fingers through the clear liquid I'd left behind on his stomach and brought it to his mouth, moaning around his finger.
I froze for a moment, unable to believe the gorgeous sight in front of me, but then he met my gaze, pulling his knees up so I could see his beautiful hole. "Claim me, Jax," he whispered, a desperation in his voice that was a mirror of my own need for him. "Please."
Growling, I pressed the tip of my dick to his entrance, pressing my hips forward enough to put pressure on it, and then I latched on to his hips and pulled him to me while pressing forward. The head of my dick popped in, making us both gasp, and then my amazing fucking mate groaned, long and low while pressing out against me, and my dick sank slowly into his hole.
I shook as I forced myself to give him a moment, closing my eyes against the sight of him and biting down on my cheek in an effort to distract myself from the hot vise around my dick.
"Jax," he moaned, rocking his hips slightly. "I need you to move."
"I can't," I whispered, still not looking at him. "I'm not going to make it."
He groaned again, and I made the mistake of opening my eyes and looking down at him. He was fucking everything.
His dick was swollen and painful looking as it throbbed between his legs, his nipples were beaded tight, and his hands were moving over his body, skimming his skin roughly, mimicking what I'd done to him the first time I had touched him.
My eyes fell to his hole, stretched tight and shiny around my dick, and I whimpered as my ass muscles jumped, and shuddered with the need to flex and take over control of my hips.
One of his big hands raked over a nipple and he groaned, shuddering, and I couldn’t take it anymore. He was too beautiful, too perfect, and he was writhing in need under my body.
He gasped, his eyes flying open as I moved, easing my hips backward and then roughly pressing forward again. I watched his face for pain as I eased out again and then slammed home, but all I saw was ecstasy, a grunt leaving his throat with every thrust.
My skin smacked against his as I slowly but roughly drove into him, and the plush flesh of his thighs and belly jiggled beautifully, tiny shockwaves traveling through it. I was completely transfixed.
It was almost enough to distract me from the way he felt wrapped around my dick, but not quite, and I knew my time was coming whether I liked it or not.
"Jax," he yelled, his hands scrambling for purchase as his back bowed, and cum shot from the end of his dick, covering his chest.
I followed him immediately over, barely having hung on that long, but definitely no match for the pulsing of his body around me. I cried out, falling forward to bury my face in his neck as my dick pulsed inside him.
His hands found my hair, pulling me to him, and I bit into the flesh of his shoulder, marking him as mine, grunting when another orgasm rolled through my body just as Lane stiffened below me, grunting as more of his cum splashed between us.
I felt our bond, amazed at
the strength of it already.
We lay like that long enough for the cum to start to dry between us, and my dick to soften and slip from his body.
I kissed his mouth softly, my nerve endings too raw for our usual aggressive, fight for dominance kiss, and he hummed softly against my mouth, lightly licking at my tongue.
When I finally got up and cleaned us off, growling at him to stay right where he was so I could take care of him, he surprised me by not giving me any shit about my bossiness, and even smiled softly when I met his eyes while cleaning him off.
Slipping back into bed once I tossed the rag back into the bathroom, I just barely stopped myself from wrapping him in my arms. I needed him to come to understand that I was as much his to touch as he was mine, and that his hands on me, his body against mine, would always be welcome.
I lay there on my back staring at the ceiling and waiting for less than a minute when a rough, dry hand slid across my chest, and a warm, big, soft body eased against my side carefully. His chest was pressed to my shoulder and for a moment, he sat there, stiff and nervous like he fully expected me to pull away, but after a moment, his body relaxed into mine, and a moment after that, fingers softly traced the lines of my chest and abs, and I sighed contentedly, drifting off to sleep.
Chapter Five
It wasn't exactly new to want to be near Jax. Since I'd met him, I'd spent more time than I cared to admit to, walking through a room just because I knew he'd be in it. I'd always lied to myself enough to almost believe I did it to show him I wasn't weak, but in reality, I'd craved his presence. That had seemed absolutely ridiculous, but the way I felt now, was even more so.
It had only been three hours since I'd seen my mate, but already I was ready to climb the fucking walls from missing him.
I didn't know how the man did it, but Jax Carter continued to surprise me. One minute he was driving me crazy to the point of wanting to break things, the next he'd have me so turned on I'd attack him like a sex-starved lunatic, and then the very next, I'd be fighting these feelings.
Mushy, sweet feelings that terrified the hell out of me with how intense they were. I wasn't stupid, I knew mates tended to fall fast for each other. I'd seen it in West and Gabriel's case, and heard about the countless other stories around Purdy, but the rate at which my feelings for Jax had developed couldn't be right, right?
Twelve hours ago, he was the annoying but hot man I wanted to fuck, and reluctantly found funny, but then he'd gone and made me feel like I mattered, and suddenly I was seeing everything about him differently.
His intrusive behavior that I'd once found annoying because it felt like he was telling me I couldn't do something as well as him, suddenly looked more like worry and overprotectiveness. Still annoying, but endearingly so.
Three weeks ago, I never would have though Jax Carter would ever be anything to me other than the bossy and rude pain in the ass with a superiority complex assigned to babysitting me. I never would have expected him to be the man who not only helped me see through the cloud of worry and guilt and feelings of failure over this fucking job and the fact that it felt like I'd made absolutely zero progress lately to see the possibilities of its end.
Logically, I knew all along that finding something that connected The Planner was the only way to end this stupid investigation so I could get on with my life, and find myself a bit of happiness again, but it took Jax stating the exact same thing, but in his super-confident, determined tone that meant things were going to fucking get done, for me to see just how close we were. To see the progress I'd actually made to even get us to this point.
Was it simple? Absolutely not. The man had been extremely careful in making sure his name stayed out of everything. He didn't even have a name as far as everyone around the house was concerned. He was literally just called The Planner, and without something that tied him by name, we couldn't arrest him, and we couldn't look further into his life and see if he had connections that reached further back.
The simple solution––whether I liked it or not––would just be to kill him. After all, he couldn't plan big events like this everyone was preparing for if he was dead, but we didn't even know if he was the actual planner, or just the front man for someone else. The fill in for some unknown person. We had nothing, and the man we'd put on following him had mysteriously ended up missing.
Thankfully, the weirdness between Darian and I had ended, since he'd actually called me this time to come and talk to him instead of showing up at my door unannounced to ask me a question he could have asked me over the phone, which was why I was knocking lightly on his door right then, and patiently… and calmly, waiting for his come in.
"You wanted to see me, sir?" I asked, poking my head in the door.
For probably the millionth time in the last seven and a half months of this investigation and his near constant presence in my daily life, I barely kept from curling my lip at the man in disgust. How had this man fooled so many people?
I mean, I got it, he was an actor, and I'd seen him be charming, but there was always a smarmy quality about everything he did and said that made every emotion he displayed fall short of reaching his cold eyes. He was handsome, of course, and maybe that had a great deal to do with why he'd made it so far in the entertainment community, but seriously, who were these people who actually believed anything that came out of the man's mouth?
Darian nodded, indicating the door with his eyes, and waited until I shut it and then moved forward before he spoke. "How well do you know the new guy?"
What? Fuck. I already didn't like this conversation. The only new guy on staff was Jax.
I forced myself not to show an ounce of emotion, though I did raise my eyebrow in question to keep from looking too shut off. Unconcerned, not unfeeling. "Uh, do you mean Jax, sir?"
He rolled his eyes, curling his lip. "Such a stupid name."
I felt the tiniest thread of annoyance sweep through me, but managed to keep my face from betraying the protectiveness I felt inside me. "A little, why?"
Should I have said more than a little? Did he know what was going on between us? He was one of the firsts––besides myself––to notice the inordinate amount of attention he'd paid me from the beginning, jokingly telling me one day that I'd acquired a not-so-secret admirer. Did he suspect that Jax had gone from being my admirer to being something more?
Darian leaned forward on the desk resting his elbows and forearms on the surface while clasping his hands in front of him, his face scrunching seriously. "Did you know he works for the FBI?"
I felt like the wind had been knocked out of me, making my reaction even better for its genuineness. "He… what?"
He watched my face for a long moment while I didn't even have to pretend my shock. I was actually surprised that he somehow knew. He nodded after a moment, his eyes softening slightly from the narrow-eyed assessment he'd been giving me. "I'm afraid that means you've been compromised."
Shit. Jax had been found out, and I'd been compromised. Did that mean they had Jax already, or did I have time to warn him? I didn't dare send a text, even when I left this office unless I knew for sure, because if they had him, they definitely had his phone, and even though our phones were nearly impossible to break into thanks to some quirks from the FBI, I couldn't risk it.
And then there was the other concern. If he thinks I've been compromised, there are very few options on what can be done for me. This place was like a fucking mob, and it was shifter run too. Shifters never hesitated to kill something if it was in their way.
I licked my lips, again not even having to pretend nervousness. In fact, between my worry over Jax, and my worry over my own life, I was getting awfully close to a full-blown freak out. "What?"
Darian gave me a sympathetic look I didn't even kind of believe. "If he's reporting back, and he recognized you at all, they know you work for me now too."
"H… how do you know Jax is with the FBI?"
Darian watched me for a moment before r
eaching down and opening a drawer on his desk, and pulling out a little handheld device and placing it on the table. I would recognize the handy little thing anywhere. It was the amplifier Jax had been using to listen in to my conversation with West. "We searched his room. We found all kinds of gear."
There wasn't anything actually in his room that would identify him as FBI. I'd been in there twice over the last few days, and all the equipment was the standard shiny black metal most equipment like that was sold in, but Darian and I both knew Jax wouldn't have it with him unless he was investigating something, and considering Darian knew the FBI was trying to track chosen sales, it was kinda logical that he would jump to the conclusion that Jax was FBI.
"Fuck," I said, meaning it. "Where is he?"
I desperately needed to know if they had him, or if he'd managed to get out. I needed to get ahold of my boss and let him know that things had changed, and I needed to get Jax and me both out of this situation before Darian had us both killed.
Darian studied me again, his face passive and cold as the moments ticked by in super slow motion while I tried desperately not to fidget under his perusal. He pursed his lips, pushing his chair back and standing before walking past me to the door. "Come on, I'll show you."
Shit. They did have him. Shit, shit, shit. I hit the button on the side of my phone, sending out an SOS text to my boss. There was no way they'd come into the facility, guns blazing, but maybe it would be enough for them to track Jax and do a quick extraction. It was only a couple of hours until showtime, if they were going to do anything before people started showing up, it was going to have to be soon.
I was expecting Jax to be locked in the root cellar with the chosen, or at least somewhere fairly secure, but Darian led me toward the auction room through his personal entrance, and I suddenly became worried about the gladiator-type arrangement I knew was going on in there. Were they going to make an example out of him in the middle of the arena? Were they going to make him fight to add to the entertainment? Was he shackled in there somewhere?
